My beloved Mother’s favorite mantra:

“”To Thine Own Self Be True” and whenever you start feeling down, loose yourself in service. You can always find someone who needs your help.”

Mom lived by that code. I witnessed love in action as a child and I saw the difference one person could make in the lives of many.

I can remember the warm feeling inside as I tagged along one day and watched Mom give away some of the pies she had spent a whole day cooking, to some  prisoners down at the jail.

I looked up and saw their smiling faces as they accepted the tasty gifts. “Now don’t you go and eat the whole thing”, she said with a stern look on her face , “You let somebody else have some.” The prisoner stopped smiling. ” Oh yeah OK Bernice I will”. The smiles returned and as we turned to leave, the bye Bernice’s and thank you Bernice’s followed us down the hallway and out the door.

On the way back home Mom told me that a lot of those guys don’t ever get visitors, and that it was nice to bring a smile to their faces. “And they appreciates that.” she said. We smiled the rest of the way home.

I had many experiences like the one above with my Mother. Sometimes it was an exercise in “loosing oneself in service” but usually it was because, as Mom would say, “It’s nice to be nice sometimes”.

I share this story with you as a representative slice of the background that inspired the man I have become.

I was blessed with a wonderful life coach, mentor, and role model.

In loving thanks to Mom.
